George, Athens

The majority of annual visitors to Greece arrive on package tours to the Greek islands and rarely get the opportunity to explore the sights of Athens, which is a pity, because despite the noise and traffic jams, it is one of the most exciting and fascinating cities in Europe. To make sure you get to see the most important sights, you can book a city tour at a very reasonable price. However, it is always wise to pre-book tours of Athens, especially if you are going to come in August. There is a wealth of scenery to enjoy in the surrounding countryside, too, so try to take in other one-day excursions out of the city. At the heart of the city, nestled at the foot of the Acropolis in Plaka, the oldest and most picturesque neighborhood in Athens. Overlooked by the glorious temple of the Parthenon, it is a maze of narrow streets running in all directions around the Acropolis.

A Total Lunar Eclipse or Blood Moon

A Total Lunar Eclipse can get a deep red glow and is sometimes called a Blood Moon.
The Moon may get a red glow during a Total Lunar Eclipse

Earth casting its shadow on the Moon.

The Moon does not have its own light, but shines because its surface reflects the Sun's rays.
Eclipses of the Moon happen when the Sun, Earth and Moon are aligned to form an almost or exact straight line. The technical term for this is syzygy, which comes from the Greek word for being paired together.

Why do Total Lunar Eclipses happen?

During a Total Lunar Eclipse, the Sun, Earth and Moon form a straight line. The Earth blocks any direct sunlight from reaching the Moon. The Sun is behind the Earth, so the Sun's light casts the Earth's shadow on the Moon. This shadow covers the entire Moon and causes a Total Lunar Eclipse.

Earth's Three Shadows

The Earth's shadow can be divided into three parts:
  • Penumbra - the outer part.
  • Umbra - darker, central part.
  • Antumbra - a partly shaded area beyond the umbra.

Sun, Earth and Moon Aligned

For a lunar eclipse to occur, the Sun, Earth and Moon must be roughly aligned in a straight line. If the Sun, Earth and Moon do not align, the Earth cannot cast a shadow on the Moon's surface and an eclipse cannot happen.
When the Sun, Earth and Moon are not perfectly aligned, only the outer part of the Earth's shadow covers the Moon. Such an eclipse is called a penumbral lunar eclipse. In a Total Lunar Eclipse, the Earth's umbra completely covers the Moon.
The Earth's umbra is about 870,000 miles (1.4 million km) wide.

Only at Full Moon

Total Lunar Eclipses happen only when:
  • The Sun, Earth and Moon are in a straight line.
  • There is a full Moon.

Full Moon & Total Lunar Eclipse

Why don't we see a lunar eclipse every month if a full Moon is needed for a Total Lunar Eclipse?
This is because the plane of the Moon's orbital path around the Earth is inclined at an angle of 5° to the Earth's orbital plane (ecliptic) around the Sun. The points where the two orbital planes meet are called lunar nodes. Eclipses can only take place near the lunar nodes - lunar eclipses occur when a full Moon happens near a lunar node.

The Moon Looks Red

Even though the Earth completely blocks sunlight from directly reaching the surface of the Moon, the Moon is still visible to the naked eye during a Total Lunar Eclipse. This is because the Earth's atmosphere refracts sunlight and indirectly lights up the Moon's surface.
The Earth's atmosphere removes or blocks parts of the sunlight's spectrum leaving only the longer wavelengths. Because of this, a totally eclipsed Moon usually looks red.

Eclipses in Different Colors

A lunar eclipse can also be yellow, orange, or brown in color. This is because different types of dust particles and clouds in the Earth's atmosphere allow different wavelengths to reach the surface of the Moon.

Seven Stages of the Eclipse

A Total Lunar Eclipse usually happens within a few hours. Totality can range anywhere from a few seconds to about 100 minutes. The July 26, 1953 Total Lunar Eclipse had one of the longest periods of totality in the 20th century - 100 minutes and 43 seconds.
There are seven stages of a Total Lunar Eclipse:
  • Penumbral eclipse begins: This begins when the penumbral part of Earth's shadow starts moving over the Moon. This phase is not easily seen by the naked eye.
  • Partial eclipse begins: The Earth's umbra starts covering the Moon, making the eclipse more visible.
  • Total eclipse begins: Earth's umbra completely covers the Moon and the Moon is red, brown or yellow in color.
  • Maximum eclipse: This is the middle of the total eclipse.
  • Total eclipse ends: At this stage, the Earth's umbra starts moving away from the Moon's surface.
  • Partial eclipse ends: The Earth's umbra completely leaves the Moon's surface.
  • Penumbral eclipse ends: At this point the eclipse ends and the Earth's shadow completely moves away from the Moon.

Where Can I See a Total Lunar Eclipse?

Everyone on the night side of the Earth can see a total eclipse of the Moon. For this reason, everyone has higher chances of seeing a Total Lunar Eclipse than a total solar eclipse, even though both occur in similar intervals.

How Often do They Happen?

About 35% of all lunar eclipses in a calendar year are Total Lunar Eclipses. On average, a Total Lunar Eclipse can be seen from any given location every 2.5 years.

Tetrads and Blood Moons

A series of 4 consecutive Total Lunar Eclipses with no partial or penumbral lunar eclipses in between is called a lunar tetrad.
The September 28, 2015 Total Lunar Eclipse is the last total eclipse of the Moon in the 2014-2015 tetrad. The first three occurred on
In recent years, eclipses in a lunar tetrad are popularly called Blood Moons. This term has no technical or astronomical basis and it is unclear where it comes from.

Bills running back LeSean McCoy will play against the New England Patriots despite aggravating an injury to left hamstring in practice this week.
McCoy had been listed as questionable. He's been bothered by the injury and missed the Bills final three preseason games after being hurt during a joint practice with the Cleveland Browns on Aug. 18. McCoy complained of being rusty after managing just 41 yards on 17 carries in Buffalo's 27-14 season-opening win over Indianapolis last week. He also had three catches for 46 yards.
The Bills still managed a combined 147 yards rushing against Indianapolis — Buffalo's best total since gaining 193 at Chicago in last year's season opener.

Pope meets Fidel Castro after warning against ideology

HAVANA (AP) — Pope Francis met with Fidel Castro on Sunday after urging tens of thousands of Cubans to serve one another and not an ideology, delivering a subtle jab at the communist system during a Mass celebrated under the gaze of an image of Che Guevara in Havana's iconic Plaza of the Revolution.
Pope Francis and Cuba's Fidel Castro shake hands, in Havana, Cuba, Sunday, Sept. 20, 2015.
The Vatican described the 40-minute meeting at Castro's residence as informal and familial, with an exchange of books and discussion about big issues facing humanity, including Francis' recent encyclical on the environment and the global economic system.
Video of the encounter broadcast on Cuban state media showed the 89-year-old former president chatting animatedly with Francis and shaking the pope's hand, the pope standing in his white vestments and Castro sitting in a white button-down shirt and Adidas sweat top.
The meeting brought together the leader who shaped Cuba for the last half of the 20th century and Latin America's first pope, who many Cubans credit with opening a path to the future by mediating the warming diplomatic relations between their country and the United States. After his Cuba visit, the pope flies to Washington for his first ever trip to the U.S.
Since their historic deal, Presidents Barack Obama and Raul Castro have reopened embassies in each other's countries, held a personal meeting, had at least two phone calls and launched a process aimed at normalizing ties in fields ranging from trade to tourism to telecommunications.
Francis called on both Fidel and Raul Castro after celebrating Mass in Havana's main plaza on his first full day in Cuba. Believers and non-believers alike streamed into the square before dawn, and they erupted in cheers when the pope spun through the crowd in his open-sided popemobile. Francis wound his way slowly through the masses and stopping to kiss children held up to him.
At one point, Francis was approached by a man who grabbed onto the popemobile and appeared to be speaking emotionally to the pontiff, who touched him on his hand and head before he was pulled away by security agents. Video showed what appeared to be the same man throwing leaflets in the air, and backers of a Cuban dissident group said on Twitter he was a member of the opposition.
The head of the opposition group Ladies in White said 22 of 24 members of her group who wanted to attend Mass were prevented from going by Cuban security agents. And two other well-known Cuban dissidents said agents detained them after the Vatican invited them to the pope's vespers service at the Cathedral of Havana.
Marta Beatriz Roque and Miriam Leiva received invitations from the office of the papal ambassador in Havana but said they were arrested as they tried to travel to the cathedral.
"They told me that I didn't have a credential and that I couldn't go to the pope's event that was taking place there in the Plaza of the Cathedral," Roque said.
Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said some dissidents were invited to events to receive a greeting from the pope, although not in a formal meeting. He said the dissidents never showed up but he could not confirm that it was because they were arrested.
While most Cubans are nominally Catholic, less than 10 percent practice their faith and Cuba is the least Catholic country in Latin America. The Vatican said 200,000 people attended Sunday's Mass, more than at similar celebrations in the same plaza by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012 and St. John Paul II in 1998.
"This is very important for us," said Mauren Gomez, who traveled some 155 miles from Villa Clara to Havana by bus, spending her time reciting the Rosary.
In his homily delivered under the gaze of a metal portrait of revolutionary fighter Che Guevara, Francis urged Cubans to care for one another out of a sense of service, not ideology. He encouraged them to refrain from judging each other by "looking to one side or the other to see what our neighbor is doing or not doing."
"Whoever wishes to be great must serve others, not be served by others," he said. "Service is never ideological, for we do not serve ideas, we serve people."
Many Cubans complain about the rigidity of the Cuban system in which nearly every aspect of life is controlled by the government, from cultural institutions to block-level neighborhood watch committees. While the system has softened in recent years, Cubans can be excluded or lose benefits if they are perceived as being disloyal to the revolution.
Cubans are also increasingly concerned about growing inequality, in which those with access to foreign capital live lives of relative luxury while others can barely feed themselves, generating jealousy and division.
"Being a Christian entails promoting the dignity of our brothers and sisters, fighting for it, living for it," Francis told the crowd.
Maria Regla González, a teacher, said she appreciated Francis' message of reconciliation.
"This is a crucial moment, and the pope's support for us is very important," she said. "He made a call for unity, and that's what we want."
Shortly after the Mass, Francis brought Fidel Castro three books including a volume of sermons by Fidel's former teacher, the Rev. Amando Llorente. Llorente taught at Colegio de Belen, a Jesuit high school where Fidel was a student. Llorente, a Spaniard, was forced out of the country after Castro's revolution and died in Miami in 2010.
Francis also brought two compact discs with Llorente's voice. Austen Ivereigh, author of "The Great Reformer: Francis and the Making of a Radical Pope," said he thinks the pontiff was using the Llorente books and recording to send a subtle message to Fidel, whose rule was marked by conflict with the Catholic Church and other groups.
"I can't help but think that it's Pope Francis inviting Fidel Castro to come to terms with his past," Ivereigh said. "There is clearly a lot of pain in this relationship," with Llorente.
Francis met afterward for an hour with Fidel's brother Raul, a declared atheist who has, perhaps jokingly, said he likes the pope so much he is thinking of returning to his Catholic roots. Francis thanked the 84-year-old leader for his pardon of thousands of petty criminals before his arrival. Castro presented the pontiff with a huge sculpture of the crucified Christ made of oars by the artist Kcho and a painting of the Virgin of Charity of Cobre, Cuba's patron saint.
The pontiff spoke off the cuff about the virtues of poverty at an evening vespers service in the San Cristobal Cathedral before a meeting with Cuban young people.
In an important aside, Francis ended Sunday's Mass with an appeal for Colombia's government and rebels, who have been holding peace talks in Havana for over two years, to put an end to South America's longest-running armed conflict.
"Please, we do not have the right to allow ourselves yet another failure on this path of peace and reconciliation," he said.

Cowboys' Tony Romo leaves game with broken collarbone

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Tony Romo has a broken left collarbone and could miss a significant amount of time for the Dallas Cowboys.

Romo was sacked and his left shoulder was slammed into the turf late in the third quarter. X-rays on the shoulder revealed the broken collarbone. He clutched his left shoulder and was down for several minutes before he sat up and eventually walked off the field.
The Cowboys, already playing without injured wide receiver Dez Bryant, took no chances and sent Romo straight to the locker room. Philadelphia's Jordan Hicks sacked and stripped Romo of the ball.
Romo suffered the same injury in the sixth game of the 2010 season. He never returned, though with the Cowboys at 1-5, there was no point in rushing his return.
He was 18 of 27 for 195 yards before he was hurt against the Eagles. Only two weeks into the season, Romo should expect to play again as long as the Cowboys remain in the hunt for an NFC East title.
Romo converted a game-saving fourth down with a pass to Jason Witten on a late drive to beat Detroit in the wild-card round last season. Romo found Witten again with 7 seconds left in a 27-26 win over the New York Giants in last weekend's opener.
With Romo coming off three back injuries in a span of 18 months last year, he had the most efficient season of his career with a franchise-record 113.2 passer rating.
